Milestone Recycled Kitchens

Its not easy being Green! By Milestone Eco Design

Awareness

The awareness of recycling as one of the ways in which we can protect our planets precious resources is on the increase.

We have now realised it’s a sensible & responsible thing to do…….but ask most people what recycled products they buy and where to buy them and few people have any real idea!

Why?…..Because very little of the material we all recycle finds it’s way back on to the high street.

To continue to build recycling as a way forward, we believe that more people should have access to tangible products that they can see, touch and use in their homes, then it can be a constant daily reminder of, not only benefit to their lives but also to their planet also.

This would provide the good, healthy dose of “Reward for Effort” and continually let us see how things we recycle can be usefully given a second lease of life.

Cost

Cost is a significant factor governing people’s purchases, sometimes at the expense of our planets welfare and recycled materials are more expensive then their virgin material equivalent.

More reprocessing of our recyclable waste material needs to be encouraged to bring down the cost and increase the sites around the country where goods can be produced. From our research it would appear that the UK is a long way behind most countries in this area.

For home use, there are companies making writing paper, pens & pencils, kitchen roll, some glasses, cups and other smaller items but nothing of any major significance that is affordable to the majority of people.

Here at milestone Design Ltd we have succeeded in producing a complete kitchen project using only materials of minimum 50% and up to 100% recycled content.

It has been an up hill battle to try and source everything from within the UK but the result has been worth it by clever and economical use of our chosen materials.

Our materials list may seem a little bizarre but by using waste yoghurt pots, vending machine coffee cups, wooden pallets, fruit crates, packaging and trimming from saw mills, we have produced a good quality, attractive, contemporary kitchen and have done it well within most peoples budgets.

This proves the point that Eco Design does not have to be expensive beyond normal reach.

Talking to our supplies, we believe this is the very first time, nationally, that it has been successfully achieved. Yet another MILESTONE in our own business development!

UK Market

The money spent on kitchen related products in the UK alone runs into many millions of pounds every year.

The vast majority of kitchens being produced for recycled board materials is absolutely enormous but sadly, supply at the moment is limited to only a small handful of UK suppliers and unbelievably they tell us they constantly struggle to get continuity of supply of waste material. HOW CAN THIS BE ?

In Europe and the US materials are much widely available and composed of more diverse ingredients such as hemp, straw, paper, sunflowers, plastics and plastic / wood composites.

We need more potential UK suppliers of recycled content board or plank material to contact.

Only by increasing our data base of materials can we create increased consumer choice and hopefully arrive at a situation where people will actually prefer their kitchens and other fitted furniture to be made from recycled materials.

But the future can be green!

Our press releases so far have created interest nationally through various newspapers and magazines.

Beyond Leeds, Concept For Living, Kitchens/Bedrooms/bathrooms/Grand Designs/Organic Life/Good Food and the Metro newspaper to name but a few.

We have an entry in the Green House builders Bible and have already had interest from two Eco Building companies, one of which is interested in exploring the market for organic cafes and shops.

Significant interest has also been expressed by the Environment Association for Universities and Colleges in terms of producing office furniture.

Having created a kitchen already, methods and working practices will be the same for any type of office furniture so we are willing to look at any type of project along similar lines.

There are many millions of homes in the UK and many more built:

Everyone has a kitchen….why shouldn’t it be made of RECYCLED MATERIALS?
